7.Introduction

In the case of a bicycle chain, the total transmission ratio of the chain drive can be changed by varying the diameter of the sprocket (therefore, the number of teeth) on both sides of the chain. This is the basis for the derailleur. By providing two or three different sized drive sprockets and up to 11 driven sprockets of different sizes, the multi speed bicycle allows up to 33 different transmission ratios. The resulting low transmission ratio makes it easier for bicycles to step on the hill, while the higher gear ratio makes the bike stronger enough to tread on the flat and downhill. In a similar manner, manually replacing the sprockets on a motorcycle can alter the characteristics of acceleration and maximum speed by modifying the final drive ratio.
