420 Stainless Steel Tube

General Properties

420 Stainless steel tube is a grade of stainless steel produced by ASTM A276-2006 Stainless steel bar and profile.

420 is equivalent to China's 3CR13 stainless steel pipe, containing chromium weight percentage 12-14%, with a minimum carbon value of 0.15%, the typical value is 0.31%.

Characteristics and uses

Because the carbon content of about 0.31%, so more than 2cr13 (carbon content of about 0.2%) after quenching the hardness is high, as a knife blade, nozzle. Valve seat, valve, etc. But because the corrosion-resistant element ni content is only below 0.75%, the corrosion resistance ability is limited therefore 420 will rust

Advantages

Corrosion Resistance

Less resistant than the austenitic grades and the 17% chromium ferritic alloys

Good resistance in the hardened condition to the atmosphere, foods, fresh water, and mild acids

Resistance lowered in the annealed condition

Best with a smooth surface finish

Heat Resistance

Not recommended for use above the relevant tempering temperature because of reduction in mechanical properties

Scaling temperature is approximately 1202^oF (650^oC)

Machinability

Tough, stringy chip build-up.

Similar to machining some of the high carbon tool steel
